Let's face it, no one would ever describe me as a social networker. Other descriptions that would probably come to people's minds first would be reclusive or private.
Social Networking, however, as I have discovered, is no longer an option but a facet of modern life. My journey into social networking began when I got my first invitation to be someone's friend on Facebook. While not a social networker, I am definitely a supporter of friendship, and therefore responded affirmatively to this first request and officially entered the world of Facebook, not realizing the full implications.
Soon, the number of friend requests multiplied, and as I dutifully accepted all these requests, I began to realize the scope of the social networking process and the importance of social networking sites.
The question then came, "How could a social networking site be a means of genuine communication?" What is it that I do regularly that would be worth sharing with others, and that might support or serve them in some way? Upon reflection, the answer that emerged was my practice of regular spiritual journaling.
For the past several years, my daily entries have centered around a Sutra or a Section from an inspirational Sanskrit Text. I am currently working with the Bhagavad Gita, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and Vijnana Bhairava. I write out the Sutra in Devanagri, then in transliteration, read various translations of that Sutra and then create my own interpretive translation. I then write a short commentary that brings this sutra to life for me. This journaling, along with a regular Hatha Yoga practice, meditation and chanting of Gayatri Mantra are the main facets of my spiritual practice. The scripture translation, however, is the foundation and essence of my practice and my journey of spiritual growth because it provides the value structure on which all the other practices rest.
So I discovered that I do have something to share with others on a daily basis and will now be posting these daily yoga scripture studies on Facebook. Who knows, I may even give a tweet to let people know what's been posted that day!
