I started going to Grapevine Yoga a year ago when my sister-in-law gave me a class as a Christmas gift. Yoga with Cathy has literally changed my life! I really look forward to classes each week in the lovely studio with all of the wonderful folks that attend. Cathy herself is the soul of jolly serenity, and she is an immensely capable and caring instructor.
Even though I am a reasonably active person, the stress reduction from the yoga and breathing that I now practice has improved my health dramatically this year. Prior to practicing yoga, each year I would succumb to at least two long bouts of flu and respiratory ailments, loosing a couple of weeks work at a time. This year, for the first time, my improved immune system has been able to fight off the "bugs," and I only experienced a very mild cold. I am also using the breathing techniques to combat menopausal headaches and other symptoms, with very good results.
Buddhists have a saying, "When the student is ready, the teacher will come." I was definitely ready, and I am so glad to have come upon Grapevine Yoga! Chris DeRose-Chiffolo
About a year ago I started taking yoga to help relieve my arthritis pain. The time I spend at the studio is like an escape from everyday activity and stress; it has become a time for me to focus solely on how my body/mind is feeling. Each session is calming, centering and I leave feeling as if I have been refreshed physically and mentally.
Not only has yoga helped my arthritis, but has made me so much more aware of my physical body. Yoga has also helped to improve my flexibility and stamina; it has also improved my balance. About six months after starting the classes, I suddenly realized the arthritis in my neck was no longer bothering me everyday! Deb
Yoga class “holds the space” in my busy week to stop and focus on self improve-ment. Instead of a cro wded gym with TVs blaring, yoga class is a quiet meditative place for relaxed, focused attention. The benefits extend outside of class as I correct my posture lifting groceries, relax my facial muscles while driving in traffic, drop my hunched shoulders as I work on the computer, and take a deep breath. With the knowledge that bodies can be injured by chronic tension, bad movement habits, and avoidable carelessness, yoga strengthens, stretches, improves balance and awareness.
I see now that it is more than an exercise or stress reduction; it’s reprogramming the body and mind for better life awareness and health. My husband and I are always seeking physical activities we can do together. Yoga supports our other physical activities by improving joint and muscle strength in a gentle non-aggressive way. As we enter our 50s, we appreciate this aspect. My husband’s chronic shoulder and hip pain have been greatly helped by the stretching and strengthening of yoga.
I know yoga is an activity one can start at any time and continue for a lifetime, as my mother started about ten years ago and, at 82, is an inspiration to those in her yoga class. Sarah
